A Sneak Peek on the Upcoming Masterclass
We have now officially kicked off the development of FoodStories’ next and final project outcome: Our Masterclass video series on the role of storytelling in food science communication.
This free educational video series will explore ways to communicate food science to different types of audiences using storytelling techniques as tools for conveying complex scientific information. Extending on FoodStories’ previously published materials, namely our best-practice handbook, flashcards, as well as our exercise toolbox and facilitators guide, this Masterclass will delve deeper into some of the key elements of storytelling and science communication:
Understanding Storytelling and Science Communication: Learn what storytelling is and why it can be powerful tool in food related science communication initiatives.
Creating Stories: Discover how to use storytelling elements to craft compelling narratives that engage your audience and enhance their understanding of your work.
Targeting the Audience: Explore ways to tailor your message to your specific audience
Story Structure: Discover different storytelling structures and how to use them to support your key messages.
Building Characters: See why characters are valuable and learn how to craft different types of characters for different purposes.
Effective Use of Storytelling: Learn how to use storytelling effectively, including recognizing its limitations and some of the pros and cons of using storytelling in various contexts.
This masterclass will combine theory and practice to explain storytelling and science communication. It will serve as teaching material for students, professors, and professionals engaged in food-related science communication or curriculum design, and the video series are planned to be freely available online in by the end of 2025.
Stories about storytelling
The phrase, “Show, don't tell” is a common storytelling practice, where the reader understands something or someone through experiencing the story (e.g. via dialogue, plot developments, subtext, characters’ emotions, etc.), as opposed to simply having it explained through exposition. Our ambition is to create an engaging video series that not only explains storytelling, but which also incorporates storytelling elements into the videos to demonstrate how storytelling can strengthen understandability. In other words, we want use storytelling to explain storytelling. We also want to provide practical examples from the real world as well as clear and concise facts and tools related to science communication with a transparent distinction between facts and fiction. Herein lies the perhaps greatest challenge of using storytelling in science communication: balancing factual information with engaging anecdotal and sometimes even fictional narratives in an effective as well as ethical manner.
Research indicates that while factual information can be persuasive, it may also increase resistance in some audiences. This is where storytelling shows its strength. The goal of FoodStories is to provide tools to food experts to improve their communication skills. Improved skills will empower food experts to expand public understanding of scientific activities and results.
This masterclass will be an open educational resource designed to stimulate innovative learning and teaching practices. Whether you are a student, professor, a curriculum designer, a science communicator, or just a curious person, this series will equip you with the skills to share your knowledge in a more impactful and engaging way.
Stay tuned for more updates and get ready to transform the way you communicate science!
