Bringing Science to Life: The
Imagine a world where science isn’t confined to textbooks and laboratories but comes alive in the classrooms where young minds are shaping their dreams. The "Cientistas nas Escolas" is transforming the way children perceive and engage with science, one school at a time.
What makes "Cientistas nas Escolas" unique? It’s the personal touch. Scientists return to their former primary schools to conduct a 90-minute interactive workshop, bringing science directly to children in their hometowns. This not only sparks curiosity but also makes science feel more accessible and relevant to young students.
The initiative focuses on schools in low-population density areas and those with lower academic performance. The aim is to inspire children who might not otherwise have the opportunity to engage with science in such an interactive and personal way. In 2022, 30 workshops were held across 14 municipalities in Portugal, reaching 498 children, many of whom met a scientist for the first time.
During these workshops, children don’t just learn about science—they experience it. Through hands-on experiments, engaging storytelling, and interactive discussions, complex scientific concepts are broken down into fun, relatable activities.
It’s not just about teaching science, it’s about sharing personal journeys and inspiring the next generation. Researchers receive specialised training to communicate effectively with young audiences, ensuring that their passion for science is both infectious and comprehensible.
Breaking down barriers and making science inclusive for all is the end goal! Curious to learn more? Dive into our resource page and explore the Handbook where the practice is represented in more detail.
